Overview

The Kano Model is a prioritization framework developed by Professor Noriaki Kano that categorizes features, tasks, or initiatives based on their impact on customer or user satisfaction. While originally created for product development, it's highly effective for personal time management and task prioritization.

The Five Categories

1. Basic Needs (Must-Haves)

2. Performance Needs (Satisfiers)

3. Excitement Needs (Delighters)

4. Indifferent

5. Reverse

Application to Time Management

Task Categorization

Basic (Must Do First)

Performance (Invest Time)

Excitement (When Time Permits)

Indifferent (Minimize or Delegate)

Reverse (Eliminate)

Prioritization Process

  1. List all tasks/activities
  2. Categorize each using Kano framework
  3. Allocate time accordingly:
    • Basic: Minimum time to meet standards
    • Performance: Bulk of focused time
    • Excitement: Discretionary time when basics covered
    • Indifferent: Minimize/eliminate
