Flowmodoro

Alternative name and implementation of the Flowtime Technique, emphasizing natural work-break rhythms over rigid time intervals for optimal flow state maintenance.

Overview

Flowmodoro (also called Flowtime) is an alternative to the traditional Pomodoro Technique that allows you to work for as long as you maintain focus, then take breaks proportional to your work time. It's designed to preserve flow states rather than interrupt them.

How It Works

  1. Start a timer when you begin working
  2. Work until you naturally lose focus or need a break
  3. Stop the timer and note your work duration
  4. Take a break proportional to work time:
    • 0-25 minutes work = 5 minute break
    • 25-50 minutes work = 8 minute break
    • 50-90 minutes work = 10 minute break
    • 90+ minutes work = 15 minute break
  5. Repeat

Advantages Over Pomodoro

Research Support

2026 research from Qatalog and Cornell University shows it takes 9.5 minutes to regain focus after task switching, highlighting why Flowmodoro's uninterrupted approach is effective.
