What is Body Doubling?
Body doubling is working on any task with another person present, without them participating in your task. The term was coined by the ADHD community and refers to having someone nearby while you complete tasks.
How It Works
Having someone by their side makes it easier to not only get started, but also stay in the zone and see a task through to completion. Body doubling works because it provides accountability. Body doubling may help to initiate focus through co-regulation, fostering a sense of connection with a safe other person.
Why Body Doubling Is Effective
Accountability
The presence of another person creates natural accountability that helps you:
- Get started on tasks more easily
- Stay focused longer
- Resist distractions
- Complete tasks fully
- Maintain momentum
Co-Regulation
When you see others focusing, you'll find it easier to do the same. This phenomenon, known as co-regulation, helps:
- Reduce anxiety about starting work
- Maintain emotional regulation
- Create a sense of safety and support
- Mirror productive behavior
