Overview

The ABCDE Method is a powerful priority-setting technique created by Brian Tracy that helps identify which tasks are truly important versus mere distractions.

The Five Categories

A - Must Do

Important tasks with serious consequences if not completed. Top priorities that should be tackled first.

B - Should Do

Still important tasks but with less severe consequences. These come after your A tasks.

C - Nice to Do

Tasks that have mild consequences and can be done after higher priorities.

D - Delegate

Tasks that can be passed on to someone else more suited to complete them.

E - Eliminate

Trivial tasks that provide little to no value and can be eliminated.

Implementation Process

  1. List All Tasks: Write everything you need to do for the coming day
  2. Categorize: Assign A, B, C, D, or E to each task
  3. Prioritize Within Categories: Number items (A-1, A-2, etc.)
  4. Start with A-1: Begin immediately on highest priority task
  5. Complete Before Moving: Finish A-1 before starting A-2
  6. Discipline: Stay focused on current priority

Key Principle

The key to making this method work is to discipline yourself to start immediately on your "A-1" task and stay at it until it is complete.
